The Drumming for Your Life Institute (DFYL) is a non-profit organization in Los Angeles, California with a mission to use the power of rhythm to help individuals develop the emotional, academic, and social skills needed to succeed in school and life. DFYL created the Reading & Rhythm (R&R) program to engage struggling readers by using a strong assertive rhythm that creates a pathway for focus and concentration, and thereby removes all doubtful voices and improves fluency, accuracy, and comprehension.
The program is facilitated in juvenile halls, detention camps, schools, libraries and family centers. Most students served by the program are juvenile offenders, read below grade level, and are at risk of dropping out of school. The program has helped struggling students close the grade level gap, thus DFYL gives them hope for the future. DFYL will implement the R&R program to struggling readers who attend Soledad Enrichment Action (SEA) Charter School as an after-school program.
There is no cost to students who participate in the program. SEA Charter Schools provide individually-tailored high school educational services, guidance, resources and support to at-risk youth and their families in gang affected communities in Los Angeles. The goal at DFYL is not only to help students succeed academically, but also help them grow to become responsible, contributing adults.
