Young Adult services of the Delray Beach Public Library is designing a Coding Program for Women and Girls between the ages of 16-24. This coding course will teach Web and Application design using HTML, CSS, and basic Javascript, the understanding of which are essential to many professions including web design, programming, and software development according the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Delray Beach is home to a variety of socioeconomic and racial demographics. Many residents have limited access to computers, minimal computer experience, and little confidence in their ability to pursue computer science as a career.
Women are largely underrepresented in the STEM fields, particularly so in computer science. Learning web design will instill practical project management and problem solving techniques that will be useful in the workforce as more jobs require computer science skills and proficiency. Youth who learn computational thinking will have more freedom to explore careers. This course in Web design will prepare them for certification in HTML and CSS.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to bring relevant and much needed computer skills to young women and girls looking to enhance their education in computer science literacy. Thank you Better World Books for supporting this program. ” –Cicely Douglas, Reference and Young Adult Librarian & Program Overseer
